By JAMES CIRRONE, US NEWS REPORTER Published: 00:08, 15 May 2026 | Updated: 00:26, 15 May 2026 Hollywood director Adam McKay attacked white liberals for remaining steadfast supporters of the Democratic Party despite its failures as an opposition party. The leftist filmmaker, behind such comedy classics as 'Anchorman', 'Step Brothers', and 'The Other Guys', went on the 'Urgent Futures' podcast to air his grievances with the type of people who would otherwise be his political allies. 'It is incredible to watch people this far down the road still say you got to stand behind the Democrat Party,' McKay said. 'The same party that wouldn’t convict Trump of a crime after he told a crowd, "Go to the Capitol."'  McKay is likely hinting at the fact that the Department of Justice under Joe Biden failed to secure a conviction of President Donald Trump over his conduct surrounding the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Scores of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol Building after Trump gave a speech, in which he continued to falsely claim that the 2020 election had been stolen from him. He continued railing against the Democrats, calling them: 'The same party where the previous presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, literally funded Trump’s campaign.' That half of McKay's statement appears to be a reference to the Hillary Clinton campaign's 'Pied Piper' strategy during the 2016 election, which involved encouraging the media to cover Trump more in an effort to boost his campaign. Hollywood director Adam McKay called out white liberals for staying loyal to the Democratic Party despite its supposed failures over the last decade or so McKay with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling, the stars of his 2015 film 'The Big Short', at the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January 2016 Are white liberals helping or hurting progressive causes by sticking with the Democratic Party? What's your view?Clinton's campaign viewed Trump, along with Ted Cruz and Ben Carson, as easier candidates to beat in a general election. This would later backfire when Trump mounted an upset victory over Clinton. McKay also accused Democrats of 'manipulative marketing'. 'We are being hit with the high-grade marketing, and no group is worse than white liberals. I mean, they are the worst,' he said. 'I’ve tried to talk to them about climate, they are so smug and captured. And it boils down to privilege. I mean, when you talk to white moneyed liberals, they’re getting a lot from this broken system.' McKay left the Democratic Party after Trump won the 2024 election, and said he would be registering with the Green Party or the Working Families Party, both further left alternatives. He previously supported Senator Bernie Sanders in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic presidential primaries. He has also been a member of the Democratic Socialists of America since 2019. The filmmaker has always had strong criticisms of the establishment-wing of the party, and was especially frustrated over how Democrats handled themselves in the 2024 cycle. 'Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 yrs, refusing to do an open convention for a new nominee, never mentioning public healthcare & embracing fracking, the Cheneys & a yr long slaughter of children in Gaza wouldn’t be a winning strategy?' he wrote on X.
