Excruciating debate moment as Lindsey Graham's sister confesses glaring blind spot ahead of runoff campaign: 'Not that informed'

Graham, running against Congressman Ralph Norman for the chance to permanently fill her late brother's seat, admitted she was 'not that informed' on national security, immediately handing her opponents a brutal weapon in the days before the runoff vote. Graham, who was appointed to temporarily fill the Senate seat held by her late brother, Lindsey Graham, was asked by moderator Greta Van Susteren about whether Taiwan and the South China Sea represented national-security issues for the United States. Her response immediately drew widespread attention online. 'I'm just gonna be honest here. I'm not on national security — I'm not that informed on national security, so… But I do support the military.' The extraordinary admission handed her opponent Ralph Norman a ready-made attack line in a race in which the Republican congressman has repeatedly argued that South Carolina needs an experienced senator with a deep understanding of foreign policy. Norman seized on the exchange, presenting himself as the candidate better equipped to deal with America's threats. 'South Carolina deserves a Senator who understands Foreign Policy. I'm a peace through strength supporter! No more forever wars!' he wrote on X. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley praised Lindsey Graham as being deeply informed on US national security, contrasting that record with his sister's admission. Darline Graham admits she's not,' she wrote. 'This is not something you inherit. And it's critical in the U.S. Senate.' South Carolina State Senator Matt Leber was blunter still. 'I did not think I had heard that right. This admittance should be the end of this race,' he wrote. The national-security exchange was only one of several flashpoints. Graham also stumbled on the affordability crisis, telling the debate audience that 50 million people in South Carolina were living paycheck to paycheck. The state has around 5.5 million residents. 'If we're going to talk about the affordability crisis in our state, we should start by knowing that South Carolina has Checks Notes 5.5 million people,' he wrote. Former Representative Adam Morgan piled on: 'She thinks 50 million people live in South Carolina?' Graham did not go quietly. In her closing remarks, she turned the fire on Norman with a blistering attack on his congressional record. On the prospect of another debate, she delivered the sharpest line of the night: 'I'd rather be out in SC meeting the voters than here on this stage with you.' She went straight for the jugular. 'Fact is, I've done more in 20 days than you have done in 20 years.' Her most cutting jab came last: 'You named a post office, so good job. That's all I can find that you've done.' The exchange comes at a pivotal moment. Graham finished first in the August 11 primary with 32.7 percent of the vote; Norman placed second with 24.3 percent, sending both into the August 25 runoff. In a recent Associated Press interview, Norman questioned the logic of Trump backing a political newcomer over a legislator who has consistently supported the president's agenda, while reaffirming his own loyalty to Trump, despite having backed Haley in the 2024 primary.
