City, winning 1-0 at half-time and seemingly in total control, suffered a second-half meltdown at Everton to put Premier League leaders Arsenal firmly in charge of the title race. The collapse began with a terrible mistake from Marc Guehi, whose sloppy backpass played in Thierno Barry to cancel out Jeremy Doku’s opener with 22 minutes remaining. Five minutes later, the home side were in front, Jake O’Brien heading in. Then, with nine minutes left — to the astonishment of Pep Guardiola and the watching City fans — Barry added a third. The visitors replied almost instantly through Erling Haaland and, remarkably, in the seventh minute of second-half stoppage time, Doku grabbed a dramatic equaliser. The damage had already been done and there was no time for an even later winner, with the full-time whistle surely met with jubilation by Arsenal fans. The leaders are five points clear of City, who have one game in hand. If Arsenal win their final three matches, they will be champions. For City, they will cling to the hope that their late rally keeps their chances alive and that Arsenal might yet slip up. Sam Lee analyses a dramatic match. One of the things that has characterised this season is City throwing in a shocking result like this after weeks of looking much improved, and it must be said that Arsenal have been guilty of that too. There must be some hope at City that West Ham United, in desperate need of a victory on Sunday, can beat the Gunners and open the door for them again. The way this season has gone, you could not fully rule it out. How many times has this title race been declared done and dusted already? The way City struck back to equalise so late does add a very unusual dynamic to the title race and this particular result. Fundamentally, though, City have slipped up massively, and if there is a positive to be taken from this it is very, very minor. But that late equaliser could be worth something, if Arsenal slip up again in the way they had been doing throughout the season, to offer City one last shot at glory. Nobody at City would have taken a point here, and Arsenal would have snapped your hand off for it, and that should tell you everything about the title race, but there is a slither of hope for City to cling to. How can you legislate for a howler like Guehi’s? It would be easy to point to a wider lack of character or focus but he has simply had a shocker. More concerning for City will be the lack of composure afterwards as they shipped two more goals, with Guehi actually doing brilliantly soon after to get across and block an Iliman Ndiaye shot after Abdukodir Khusanov lost possession needlessly. The whole team looked shellshocked for that period, with their characteristic calm heads nowhere to be seen. They looked completely gone by the time the third went in and it was only the sheer desperation of their situation that forced Mateo Kovacic into the through ball to Haaland that spooked Everton at 3-2, immediately cutting the deficit. City were hardly banging the door down late on, and Everton still had a threat about them, but Doku’s relentlessness went some way to digging them out of a hole that they should never have been in. The faces of the City players walking off the pitch told the story: this was most likely the night their title hopes faded, but Doku’s late goal — a brilliant one, like his first — will change the mood slightly. In the same way that City looked massive favourites after beating Arsenal, only for Arsenal to win their next two games and put the pressure back on City, there will be some pressure for Arsenal to deal with next Sunday if City beat Brentford on Saturday, and close the gap to two points. City should never have let it get to this, but it is thanks to Doku that they have anything to cling to. His opening goal was a screamer and then for him to come up with another so late on shows a massive improvement in his game, and highlights how well he has been playing of late. It could be worth something come the final reckoning, though it is now out of their hands. Spot the pattern. Connect the terms Find the hidden link between sports terms
