Nisan 2026Londraİngiliz The Guardian gazetesinin hükümet kaynaklarından edindiği bilgilere dayandırdığı habere göre, Aralık 2024'te İngiltere'nin Washington Büyükelçisi olarak atanacağı açıklanan Mandelson için Kabine Ofisine bağlı Etik ve Uygunluk Ekibi (PET) ve Birleşik Krallık Güvenlik Soruşturması Birimi (UKSV) güvenlik soruşturması yaptı. PET'in açık kaynaklar üzerinden yaptığı inceleme sonucunda Dışişleri Bakanlığına, Mandelson'un, ABD'de reşit olmayan kız çocuklarına yönelik fuhuş ağı kurduğu iddiasıyla yargılandığı sırada hapishanede ölü bulunan milyarder Jeffrey Epstein'le bağlantısı, mali ilişkileri, İngiltere'nin itibarıyla ilgili oluşturabileceği riskler ve geçmiş görevlerinde yaşananlarla ilgili bir rapor sunuldu. Soruşturmanın UKSV'nin yürüttüğü ikinci bölümü ise Başbakan Keir Starmer'ın atama kararını açıklamasından sonra başladı ve Ocak 2025 sonunda tamamlandı. Yürütülen soruşturma sonucunda Mandelson hakkında olumsuz rapor verildi ancak atanacağı, bir ay öncesinde Başbakan Starmer tarafından açıklanan Mandelson için Dışişleri Bakanlığı istisnai bir yetki kullandı ve güvenlik soruşturması raporunu görmezden gelerek atamayı yaptı. Güvenlik soruşturması sonucunda hazırlanan raporu görmezden gelme kararının Dışişleri Bakanlığındaki hangi yetkili tarafından alındığı ise bilinmiyor. Halihazırda Başbakan Yardımcısı olarak görev yapan David Lammy'nin Dışişleri Bakanlığı döneminde gerçekleşen olaydan Başbakan Starmer'ın haberinin olup olmadığına ilişkin bilgi de bulunmuyor. Geçmişte konuyla ilgili yorum yapan Starmer, atama sürecinde şimdi sahip olduğu bilgilere sahip olmadığını, güvenlik soruşturmasının ise Mandelson'a olumlu rapor verdiğini açıklamıştı. ABD'de 9 Eylül 2025'te ortaya çıkan yazışmalarda, İngiltere'nin Washington Büyükelçiliğine Şubat 2025'te başlayan Mandelson'ın Epstein'a, "En iyi dostum" diye hitap ettiği ortaya çıkmıştı. Mandelson'ın, Epstein'a gönderdiği doğum günü mesajında, "Gelsin diye saatlerce beklerdiniz. Çoğu zaman etrafınızda olduğuna alıştığınızda birden yine yalnız kalırdınız. Onun yerine eğlendirmeniz gereken bazı ilginç arkadaşlarıyla baş başa kalırdınız." ifadeleri yer almıştı. Yazışmaların yayımlanmasının ardından Mandelson görevden alınırken, ABD Adalet Bakanlığı, ocak sonunda Epstein'la ilgili yeni belgeler yayımlamıştı. Bu belgelerde ise Mandelson'un, Epstein'dan 75 bin dolar aldığı ortaya çıkmış, ayrıca reşit olmadığı belirtilen kız çocuklarıyla çekilmiş uygunsuz fotoğrafları paylaşılmıştı. Tony Blair ve Gordon Brown hükümetlerinde (1997-2010) bakanlık yapan Mandelson, bu para transferini hatırlamadığını açıklamıştı. Mandelson'un Ticaret Bakanı olduğu ve 2008 krizinin etkilerinin sürdüğü dönemde, Epstein'e piyasa için hassas hükümet bilgilerini paylaştığı da ortaya çıkmış, Brown, bu hareketi "affedilemez ve vatanseverlikten uzak" olarak nitelemişti. Son olarak Mandelson'u Washington Büyükelçisi olarak atayan Starmer, Mandelson'un 2008 sonrasında da Epstein'la ilişkide olduğunu bilmesine rağmen onu atadığı için özür dilemiş, ilişkinin derinliği konusunda Mandelson'un yalan söylediğini öne sürmüştü.
