Egypt offers a mix of messages about the US-Israel war in Iran

When the United States and Israel began Operation Epic Fury early on February 28, Egypt remained conspicuously quiet. The hesitation reflected Egypt’s competing pressures: a strategic partnership with the United States, a cold peace with Israel, and a cautious yet historically pragmatic posture toward Tehran.

When Egypt did respond, its message largely avoided mention of the initial operation. Instead, the Foreign Ministry condemned Iran’s attacks on “brotherly Arab nations,” and President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi followed up with calls to Gulf leaders to express his solidarity.

As Cairo works to balance its relationships, the government’s rhetoric has been measured and largely responsible. Despite domestic noise, Egypt has an opportunity to more clearly assert itself as a U.S. ally.

Cairo Signals Solidarity With Arab States Under Iranian Attack

Cairo’s response was carefully constructed to position Egypt as a supporter of the Arab nations under attack without tying itself directly to the U.S.-Israeli military operation. By condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states and Jordan, the Foreign Ministry signaled that Egypt views Tehran’s actions as a direct threat to regional stability.

Sisi reinforced this framing in a March 1 address to military leaders where he stated that Iran had “made a mistake in its calculations” and should not have targeted the Gulf “despite any reasons.” His emphasis remained on defending Arab state sovereignty and deterring further Iranian escalation.

Domestic Voices Undercut the Government’s Public Message

Alongside the government’s carefully calibrated messaging, several prominent Egyptian political and media figures have advanced narratives sharply critical of the attacks on Iran — and the attackers.

In an X post, Egyptian parliamentarian and media personality Mostafa Bakry warned that, “If Iran falls, the eyes of the Israeli enemy will turn toward major countries in the Middle East.” Broadcaster Ahmed Moussa, who has close ties to the Sisi government, described the campaign as a “Zionist-American plan” to overthrow the Iranian regime and urged Tehran to direct its response toward Israel. “We want a real rocket that strikes the heart of Tel Aviv,” he posted on X.

Parliamentarian Mohamed Farid offered a contrasting view, arguing that “complete elimination of any Iranian nuclear threat and full neutralization of its ballistic missile capabilities are urgent necessities to end its criminal aggression.”

In Egypt’s tightly managed media environment, such conflicting rhetoric risks blurring the clarity of the state’s official position and complicating Cairo’s effort to present a coherent strategic message.

Cairo Should Seize the Moment to More Clearly Assert Itself as a U.S. Ally

When Washington evaluates regional responses to Operation Epic Fury, clearer public alignment would strengthen Cairo’s standing with the United States and reinforce its role as an ally.

Egypt does not need to endorse every operational decision taken by the United States or Israel. Instead, Cairo should more explicitly highlight shared interests with Washington, including deterring Iranian missile and proxy activity, preventing nuclear escalation, and protecting maritime security.

By aligning messaging among government and allied voices, Cairo can reinforce its interests and enhance the credibility of its policy positions. By sharpening its public alignment to reflect its alliances with the United States and Israel, Egypt can reinforce its value and position itself as a reliable strategic partner at a critical moment.
