New DWP figures revealed the 13 most common heart conditions listed on PIP claims, with over 100,000 people receiving up to £191.30 a week in payments. Personal Independence Payments (PIP) can provide hundreds of pounds each month to help people with disabilities. A diagnosis alone is not always enough to successfully claim PIP though. In order to qualify, your condition must affect either your daily living or mobility, meaning some people could even be eligible before they get an official diagnosis. The DWP ’s latest figures showed in January 2026, 102,889 people were claiming PIP with a cardiovascular condition listed as their main disabling condition. 10,198 claimants reported having a cardiovascular disease that was currently unknown or not otherwise categorised by the DWP. Top heart conditions on PIP applications and claimant figures: Ischaemic heart disease (coronary heart disease) - 30,489 Cardiac failure - 16,063 Cardiac arrhythmias - 11,354 Peripheral arterial disease - 6,675 Hypertension - 5,921 Congenital heart disease - 5,312 Peripheral venous disease - 5,030 Cardiomyopathy - 4,373 Aneurysm - 3,572 Valve disease - 3,342 Heart transplantation - 310 Pericarditis - 245 The number of claimants receiving PIP for ischaemic heart disease increased by over 100 since December 2025, while the number claiming for pericarditis decreased from 247 in December to 245. The most common cardiovascular disease, ischaemic heart disease, occurs when the arteries that supply your heart with oxygen are disrupted by a build-up of fatty substances, causing your heart to weaken. Over time the arteries can become completely narrowed or blocked. The condition can cause severe fatigue, breathless and chronic chest pain which can impact a person’s daily life or mobility. However, some people are able to continue their normal lives once they have a treatment plan in place so it’s not automatically a disabling condition for everyone with the diagnosis. According to the British Heart Foundation , around 2.3 million people in the UK have coronary heart disease. Healthy lifestyle changes can also prevent your risk of developing this disease, such as eating healthy, not smoking and staying active. PIP can provide up to £191.30 a week, but not all claimants get this amount. The benefit is split into two elements; the daily living element and mobility element. Exactly how much claimants will get depends on how severely their condition affects them and in which category. Each element has two weekly rates: Daily living enhanced rate: £114.60 Daily living standard rate: £76.70 Mobility enhanced rate: £80 Mobility standard rate: £30.30 To be eligible, you must also be: Over 16 Under state pension age if you’re claiming for the first time Expect the difficulties from your condition to last for at least 12 months from the time they started Living in England or Wales as Scotland has a different benefit known as the Adult Disability Payment
