Dubai Police warn over fake QR code scams: What residents need to know now

Dubai Police have warned residents about a growing cyber fraud tactic involving fake QR codes being circulated through text messages, emails and even public spaces.

Authorities said scammers are creating codes that appear legitimate, often luring users with offers such as prizes, discounts and exclusive deals. Once scanned, victims may be redirected to fraudulent websites that request sensitive personal or banking details, or in some cases, expose devices to security breaches and account takeovers.

The warning is part of the ongoing Beware of Fraud campaign, which aims to raise awareness about increasingly sophisticated online scams targeting personal and financial information.

How QR code scams are tricking users

Authorities said fraudsters are distributing fake QR codes via digital messages and physical placements in public areas. These codes are often designed to look authentic and attractive, encouraging users to scan them with promises of rewards or special offers.

Once activated, the codes can lead to fake websites that collect sensitive information such as bank details, personal data or login credentials. Scammers may also attempt to gain unauthorised access to devices and compromise user accounts.

Public urged to verify before scanning

Dubai Police have urged residents to exercise caution and verify the source of any QR code before scanning it, particularly when offers appear unusual or unexpected.

They advised the public not to enter personal or professional information on unverified links and to avoid interacting with QR codes from suspicious or unknown sources.

Awareness remains the first line of defence

Officials emphasised that public awareness is the most effective protection against cybercrime, urging the community to remain vigilant as fraud tactics continue to evolve and become more convincing.
