And if they ignore the Code, they could be committing a criminal offence.‌As changeable UK weather often catches motorists off guard, Rule 226 of the Highway Code states that drivers need to make sure they use appropriate lights. Failing to follow these rules isn’t just unsafe, it could see you behind bars.‌It explains: "You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet).
