Donald Trump's bizarre 24 hours as concerns grow about the alarming colour of his handsDonald Trump's on-again-off-again relationship with Iran appears to be on again. For now. We think. Maybe. Meanwhile, his ballroom is less popular than ghosts and his hands are looking even more haunted. Here's your daily roundup of the Trump administration's nonsenseCommentsNewsopinionMikey Smith Deputy Political Editor23:00, 06 May 2026View 2 ImagesThere are mounting concerns over Trump's hands(Image: Pool/ABACA/Shutterstock) Donald Trump's on-again-off-again relationship with Iran appears to be on again. For now. We think. Maybe. ‌ There's apparently a one-page deal floating around that could be a blueprint for a diplomatic end to the war in Iran, which Trump started for no adequately explained reason. If it doesn't immediately fall apart, which, as always, is the most likely outcome, then it could still take months to hammer out - and months more before the Strait of Hormuz is operating as it was before Trump started the war, again, for no adequately explained reason. Fingers crossed, of course - but once a deal is inked, the first thing everyone's going to do is compare it to the deal that was in place during Trump's first term, left to him by Barack Obama, and which Trump ripped up. If it's even kind of similar, people will wonder what the point of any of this is for. ‌ Still, Republicans, who selected a string of Trump-endorsed candidates a string of state primaries last night, will probably still back him. ‌ Meanwhile, in Trumpworld Why Trump really needs a dealMore people believe in ghosts than support the ballroomHoward Lutnick is not having a nice dayTrump called in the military to fix autocorrectHere's what you need to know ‌ 1. Here's why Trump really needs to get a deal in IranThe price of a gallon of petrol in the US climbed 31 cents in the past week, spiking to an average of $4.54 (£3.34) per gallon Wednesday, a price 52% higher than before the war with Iran began. Trump continues to insist publicly that this is a small price to pay for Iran not to have a nuclear bomb - even going so far as to say today that if Oil were to go up to $200 (£147.13) a barrel - almost double what it is now - it would be "worth it". More people believe in ghosts than want Trump's ballroomSpeaking of polling, these startling numbers from CNN are going to go down very badly with El Presidente. Harry Enten, Trump's favourite polling guru, revealed just 28% of Americans support the ballroom. And just in case you thought "oh, that's not so bad", he compared it to the proportion of Americans that believe in ghosts (39%) and believe in telepathy (29%). And this poll is based on the ballroom being privately paid for - given more recent reporting that Trump is asking for a BILLION DOLLARS of taxpayers cash to pay for it and the dictator bunker they're apparently building underneath it, I don't think he'll be overtaking "believe in ghosts" any time soon. Trump's hands are starting to look even more...alarmingThe White House has consistently laughed off concerns about the discolouration of Donald Trump's right hand - which he usually covers up with a thick layer of makeup. The administration says the purple colour is down to the President constantly shaking hands, which combined with the stack of aspirin he takes, makes him prone to bruising. All of which kind of tracks as long as you're talking about his right hand. But back in January people noticed a second bruise, this time on his left hand. Trump himself said he had clipped it on a table. Well, it seems Trump has clipped his left hand on a massive table this time, because the amount of makeup on his left now matches the size of the bruise on his right. Unless he's become ambidextrous at nearly 80 and started switching up the hand he uses to greet people, there's something else going on. ‌ View 2 ImagesTrump's hands are now both covered in makeup(Image: AFP via Getty Images) 4. Lutnick redefines the word "I"So Howard Lutnick, Trump's tiggerish commerce secretary has been testifying before the House Oversight Committee about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. You'll recall way back when, Lutnick, who lived next door to Epstein in New York, said he'd been round his neighbour's house just once in 2005 and found him to be so icky he vowed never to be in a room with him again. He said: "We left, and in the six or eight steps it takes to get from his house to my house, my wife and I decided that I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again. So I was never in the room with him socially, for business, or even philanthropy. If that guy was there, I wasn't going, cause he's gross." ‌ Well, it turned out that wasn't true. A photo was found in the Epstein files of Lutnick on an island with Epstein. (Which strictly speaking isn't being in a room with him, but surely he's not going to use that excuse...right?) Lutnick has since acknowledged that not only did they see each other after he decided he was "gross", but that he visited his private island in 2012, and kept in touch with him over email - discussing a business venture in 2013 and corresponding over a neighbourhood issue in 2018, long after Epstein was a known, convicted sex criminal. Which brings us to today, when Lutnick appeared in front of a closed session of the committee investigating the probe into Epstein's crimes, and the release of the Epstein Files. ‌ We only know what we can get from people who were in the room, but the session does not seem to have gone well. “If Donald Trump had seen the video transcript, he would have fired Howard Lutnick,” said congressman Ro Khanna. Suhas Subramanyam, a Democrat from Virginia, said the commerce secretary had claimed "he could remember nothing about the visit to the island. Couldn't remember why he was there. Couldn't remember anything he saw." Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari went yet further, saying: "I feel very comfortable saying that Howard Lutnick is a pathological liar who is enabling the most egregious cover-up in American history". And it's being reported that Lutnick's bizarre excuse for the discrepancies in the versions of his story came down to his definition of the word "I". He claimed he was not lying when he said "my wife and I decided that I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again", because in that context "I" meant him alone. So if his wife and kids were there, as they were for lunch on Epstein Island in 2012, that didn't count. ‌ So no, it didn't go well - and by the look on his face as reporters barked questions at him on his way out, he knows it did not go well. Speaking to military families this afternoon, Trump admitted he'd had some difficulty typing his wife's name into tweets and Truth Social posts, because autocorrect kept changing it. And apparently the only people able to assist Trump with this minor inconvenience was ...the US military. Article continues belowContent cannot be displayed without consent
