Published: 07:27, 30 June 2026 | Updated: 07:27, 30 June 2026 A dog owner has been slammed after dumping his German Shepherd on the side of a busy road in Melbourne.  The man was spotted pulling over and pushing out his dog Chance, on Dohertys Road in Truganina, at about 8.50pm on Monday. The 2009 BMW then drove off, leaving the German Shepherd alone.  A concerned resident revealed volunteer group Pawsafe safely retrieved the dog from the high-traffic industrial area and she had taken him in. 'He is now safe with me until we find him a loving home,' she wrote on Facebook.  An RSPCA Victoria spokesman told Daily Mail it was aware of the case.  'RSPCA Victoria has received a report relating to a dog allegedly dumped from a car in Truganina,' he said. 'This is an active investigation.' The search is on for a man who abandoned his German Shepherd on the side of a busy Melbourne road An RSPCA Victoria spokesman told Daily Mail it was aware of the case Victoria Police have been notified.  If the dog owner is found and charged, he could face up to 12 months' imprisonment and fines of more than $40,000 under Victoria’s animal cruelty laws.  Pawsafe, which thanked German Shepherd Rescue for taking Chance into their care, has since asked for potential foster carers to come forward. 'Yesterday was an incredibly traumatic experience for Chance,' they said in a Facebook post.  'After being cruelly dumped and left to fend for himself, he has been through far more than any dog ever should, but despite everything, he deserves the chance to feel safe, loved and part of a family. 'Now we need one more very important piece of the puzzle, a loving foster home.'  They said the ideal carer would have experience of German Shepherds, be able to include Chance in everyday family life and treat him like family.  '[They would] ideally have no other dogs so Chance has the time and space to settle, decompress and rebuild his confidence,' they said.  Pawsafe has since asked for potential foster carers to come forward 'This beautiful boy has already captured so many hearts, and we're determined to find him a foster home where he can begin healing while waiting for his forever family.' Daily Mail has contacted Pawsafe, German Shepherd Rescue and Kayla for comment. Many Aussies were angered by the dog owner's actions.  'If they didn't want it they could have surrendered it to a shelter or vets. Scum,' one said.  'I don’t know how someone could do that to any animal. If you don’t want it, take it to the pound or a rescue centre,' a second said.  'Disgusting behaviour. Hope he or she gets jail time if found guilty,' a third added.  No comments have so far been submitted. Why not be the first to send us your thoughts, or debate this issue live on our message boards.
