Scott Taetsch / Getty Images Share full articleWASHINGTON — Mookie Betts will undergo an MRI after he was removed with right lower back tightness in the first inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 10-5 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday afternoon, manager Dave Roberts said. While the Dodgers will wait on the test results before making an official injured list designation, Roberts said Betts is unlikely to play at least the next couple of days. “It’s certainly more moderate than significant,” Roberts said. “We’ll huddle up and see if we need to get a player here to protect against us, depending on how the MRI comes. But yeah, (Betts) certainly won’t be playing the next couple days, I would assume.” Betts tweaked his back running the bases in the first inning, Roberts said. After Kyle Tucker singled, Betts worked a full-count walk off Nationals starter Jake Irvin and scored from first base on Freddie Freeman’s two-run double to the right-center gap. He did not take the field for the bottom of the first, and was subbed out for Miguel Rojas. An IL stint appears to be likely regardless of the MRI results. The Dodgers (6-2) can play short-handed for a game or two, but the club won’t play at that disadvantage for more than a couple of games. That they’ll play three games on a turf field starting Monday will also factor into the decision. After Sunday’s series finale against the Nationals, the Dodgers head to Rogers Centre for a World Series rematch against the Toronto Blue Jays. The stadium is one of five in MLB that uses artificial turf instead of a traditional dirt infield. Teams generally prefer to avoid using players on turf fields if they are dealing with compact injuries, as it tends to lead to higher impact on the body. Even if Betts’ MRI results come back clean, the Dodgers won’t play down a man for four games. Hyeseong Kim is the logical candidate for a call-up, as he’s the lone middle infielder on the 40-man roster not currently with the active club. Kim was the final position-player cut of spring training, though Roberts was hopeful that continued reps in Triple A would help Kim establish some mechanical changes he made over the offseason. In six games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Kim is 9-for-26 with an .823 OPS. Kim was notably missing from Oklahoma City’s starting lineup on Saturday. Rojas and Alex Freeland can also fill in at shortstop, though the two currently make up a platoon at second base. Still, missing Betts for any period of time isn’t ideal. “Disappointed for him,” Roberts said. “We’re sort of starting to get going a little bit, and the way he’s playing defense, and he’s a big part of what we do. Any time you miss, it’s gonna take some time to kind of get your footing. So disappointed for him, but hopeful that it’s not long-term.” After a slow start to the season, Betts broke out in Friday’s game with two hits, including a towering two-run home run that was part of a five-run inning. The Dodgers’ offense slumped collectively to open the first week of regular-season action, but appears to be turning a page. Los Angeles has put up 23 runs and 32 hits over its last two games. With Betts likely to miss time, the reigning World Series champions will now face their first depth test of the season. Spot the pattern.
