Published: 22:22, 14 August 2026 | Updated: 22:22, 14 August 2026 Undeniably, the Clacton by-election was largely a waste of public money. Reform UK’s leader Nigel Farage is left disadvantaged by the whole event, which he triggered in the misguided hope it would become a great ‘people versus the establishment’ tournament.  In fact, it descended into farcical territory, made worse by Mr Farage’s decision not to turn up to the election count. Even so, this Essex seaside poll was not a dead loss. It served to illuminate several broader issues within British politics, and proffers lessons from which all Right-wing parties must learn. Most prominently, there was the liberal media’s willing embrace of runner-up Count Binface.  The comedian behind the mask brought some smiles along the way. But, tellingly, some media outlets were far more comfortable giving space to Binface than they were to Mr Farage, a reticence most likely explained by Reform’s stance on immigration. This demonstrates the hurdles the Conservatives, Reform and Restore must overcome if they are to communicate their policies to the electorate in a detailed, rounded and sensible manner. Mr Farage’s marginally increased majority also shows considerable public support for candidates who offer something other than political orthodoxy. That said, it is clear that by instigating the by-election the Reform leader dropped a political clanger by failing to recognise the high probability that Labour, the Conservatives and other major parties would decide not to contest the seat. Nigel Farage, pictured during his 3am victory speech, won the Clacton by-election after being forced to defend his seat against a string of comedy candidates led by Count Binface The then Tory shadow home secretary David Davis tried a comparable trick in 2008 and was similarly left flapping in the wind. Did Mr Farage not realise the same would happen to him? If not, such a simple strategic error makes it harder to see him as a potential future prime minister. By comparison, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is growing in political stature day by day, and her party is stronger than it has been in years. Another important lesson from Clacton is how Right-wing parties need to put aside their differences, and unite against the threats Labour poses to this country’s economic power and social cohesion. The Daily Mail has noted many times that there is significant common ground among them. This should become a source of collaboration rather than antagonism in the months and years ahead. As to Mr Farage’s future, that largely hangs upon the now-resumed investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards into the £5million gift from cryptocurrency tycoon Christopher Harborne. No-one should prejudge the conclusions that inquiry may reach. For now, Labour is enjoying an inevitable bounce in the polls after its change of leader, but that will not last long. Andy Burnham, let’s remember, has yet to face any proper scrutiny. His insufferably chummy social media videos will be of no help when he is being rigorously cross examined by Mrs Badenoch at Prime Minister’s Questions in a few weeks’ time. In the wake of its internal coup, Labour’s positions on some of the most important policy areas – taxation, public borrowing and defence, to name but three – remain a complete enigma. Indeed, the Prime Minister has revealed so little of his real plans he may as well be wearing a bin over his head.
