Conflicting claims emerge over proposed US-Iran memorandum
المصدر: CGTN EN | Source: CGTN ENA report by Iran's official news agency IRNA outlining key points of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was released on Friday and was later slammed by US President Donald Trump as untrue.
According to Iran's report, nuclear talks between Iran and the United States will be held within a 60-day period after the two countries' potential signing of the MoU.
The outline of the MoU says no new agreement will be reached on Iran's nuclear program and Iran's "peaceful" nuclear program will remain intact. The MoU will be mainly aimed at ending the war on all fronts in the region, including Lebanon.
On the issue of control over the Strait of Hormuz, the reported outline says Iran will make no commitment to handing over the management of the Strait of Hormuz or the waterway's return to its pre-war conditions.
On the economic front, the report says a clear process has been specified in the MoU for the release of Iran's frozen assets concurrent with the document's signing and within the subsequent 60-day negotiations, adding that if Iran signs the MoU, part of its assets will be released immediately, and the rest will be unblocked gradually during the following talks.
Soon after the report, Trump said Iran's leaked comments do not represent what has been agreed to in writing.
"What they said, including their weak and pathetic statement on having a deal, bears no relation to the truth. Very dishonorable people to deal with. With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith. AMAZING!" he wrote on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, CNN reported on Friday, citing three sources, that a signing ceremony for an MoU with Iran would most likely be held in Geneva, Switzerland, and could take place as early as Sunday.
Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency then rejected this claim.
