They start with something simple.Can you show where this data came from? Who had access to it? What changed between the decision and now? Can you reconstruct the exact dataset, logic and pipeline behavior from that point in time?On paper, the answers usually exist. There are policies, controls and tracking spreadsheets. But inside the engineering team, the harder question sits underneath: can the system itself prove any of it?The gap between what the policy says and what the platform can demonstrate has become one of the biggest risks in regulated data engineering. Financial services, healthcare and insurance firms have spent years building compliance processes around their data platforms. Reviews happen. Exceptions are tracked. Audits are supported.
