With their second pick of the 2026 NFL Draft — and their final selection in the Top 100 — the Commanders took Antonio Williams, a fluid and polished receiver out of Clemson. Adding to the receiving corps was a priority for Washington, which lost multiple wideouts to injuries throughout last season and has lacked a consistent No. 2 receiver to complement Terry McLaurin. Whether Williams — the 71st pick of the draft — can develop into that, however, remains to be seen. “I’d describe him (as) just a great athlete. A great athlete and really fast,” Commanders general manager Adam Peters said Friday night. “He’s an NFL route runner. (He) can win versus press. He can beat man coverage. “And we really liked the versatility of him as well. … That’s really the thing that differentiated him from a lot of guys is winning outside and winning against really good players outside, especially in 2024.” Williams, however, spent the majority of his time at Clemson in the slot, playing 78.1 percent of his career passing snaps inside, according to Pro Football Focus. His junior season in 2024 was his most balanced in alignment. That year, he spent 43 percent of his passing snaps outside. He missed two games as a senior because of a hamstring injury, and his numbers as a junior — 75 catches, 904 receiving yards, 11 touchdowns — were far better than his numbers as a senior (55, 604, 4). Washington’s top contender to be a complementary deep threat to McLaurin is veteran Dyami Brown, a 2021 Commanders draft pick who returned to the team on a one-year deal in free agency. The team also added veteran Van Jefferson and re-signed 2022 first-round pick Treylon Burks, who impressed in the second half of last season, when he joined Washington as a depth option amid injuries. A controlled, fluid athlete who projects best in the slot. Washington has drafted a slot receiver every year since Peters took over the front office, selecting Luke McCaffrey in the third round in 2024 and Jaylin Lane in the fourth round in 2025. Williams joins a young group that doesn’t have distinguishing size — McCaffrey is the largest of the three, at 6-feet-2, 195 pounds — but the trio can also contribute as returners on special teams. “Yeah, I think it’s just kind of how the board falls and how we’re looking at guys,” Peters said when asked about the receivers’ height. “He’s not huge, but he’s not small either,” Peters said of Williams, who measured 5-foot-11 ½ and 187 pounds at the NFL combine. Peters added that Williams will work as the “Z,” which lines up slightly off the line of scrimmage, as well as in the slot. The 21-year-old was among the 20-plus prospects, alongside first-round pick Sonny Styles, who visited the Commanders on April 14 to meet with the coaching staff and spend an evening at Topgolf. Williams said he believed Washington could be a good fit for him after that visit. “I just walked away with a feeling that they were very interested and that if I did make it to 71, there was a good chance that they were gonna take me,” Williams said Friday, shortly after the Commanders selected him. Peters praised Williams’ work ethic and toughness, citing multiple injuries that he played through during his time at Clemson. He also raved about Williams’ detailed route running. “He doesn’t look like a college guy out there,” Peters said. Washington has four picks over the final four rounds of the draft, and still has plenty of room to add depth and competition, if not a starter, at nearly any position. Adding to the secondary and acquiring more options in the pass rush are both certainly plausible, along with picking up more offensive help for Daniels, be it at a skill position or on the interior of the offensive line.
