The colorful display quickly went viral on overseas social media platforms, with international viewers praising the unique atmosphere where football passion met ethnic cultures.
More than a sporting event, "Dian Chao" offers a glimpse into how ethnic unity is experienced in everyday life – through shared participation, cultural expression and a sense of belonging.

The viral energy of "Dian Chao" directly challenges the conventional external narrative that portrays China's ethnic regions through a singular lens of cultural homogenization.

The 10-episode music documentary Western China's Melody captured this transformation by exploring folk music from different regions and ethnic communities across western China.
The production team traveled deep into local communities, meeting music inheritors and recording not only unique musical forms but also the emotions behind them: memories of family, festivals, love, labor and connections with nature.
Danish DJ and music producer HEDEGAARD participated in the project, collaborating with local musicians and experiencing traditional Chinese music.
"China is no longer just a distant image seen on social media," he said. "Through music, I discovered that people everywhere share the same emotions – love, family and memories."
The project demonstrates that cultural preservation does not mean keeping traditions unchanged or isolated. Heritage remains alive when it continues to evolve through creativity, innovation and cultural exchange.

On July 1, 2026, the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law officially came into effect in China, providing a legal framework to promote exchanges, interactions and integration among ethnic groups.

From traditional festivals and folk music to contemporary cultural creations, diverse forms of heritage are encouraged to continue developing in modern society.
Like many countries around the world, China also views safeguarding social cohesion and national unity as a fundamental responsibility of the state. The law provides institutional support for maintaining ethnic unity and social stability.
A viral football match and a modern folk melody reveal a broader truth about contemporary China: Unity does not mean eliminating differences. It means creating opportunities for diverse cultures to preserve their identities, communicate with one another and contribute to a shared future.
