record in mixed relay sprint, but lose it minutes later to JamaicaTia Clayton ran the final leg for Jamaica's recod BEN STANSALL/AFP via Getty Images Share articleCanada set a new mixed 4x100m mixed relay world record at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana on Saturday — before losing it within minutes to Jamaica. Canadian quartet Eliezer Adjibi, Marie-Eloise Leclair, Duan Asemota and Audrey Leduc opened the weekend’s event — the first World Relays to be held in Africa — with 40.07 in the first of three heats. That run was 0.27 seconds faster than the previous world record of 40.30 set by Canada at last year’s World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou. However, just two heats later, Jamaican quartet Ackeem Blake, Tina Clayton, Kadrian Goldson and Tia Clayton bettered the newly-set record best by 0.08, clocking a record time of 39.99 seconds. The event saw teams line-up in the new man-woman-man-woman running order, with Tia Clayton running the final stretch as the Jamaica team were the first to break the 40-second barrier in the event. Germany (40.15), Netherlands (40.20) and Nigeria (40.24) trailed Canada in the first heat, but also recorded faster times than the world record of 40.30 which stood before Saturday. They join Team USA, which was represented by Courtney Lindsey, Jada Mowatt, Kyree King and E’Lexis Hollis, in qualifying for Sunday’s final and the World Athletics Championships in Beijing next year, after they won the second mixed heat with a time of 40.36. Spain (40.51) and Great Britain and Northern Ireland (40.72) also qualified. The top six teams on Sunday’s final will secure passage to the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest this September. A faster world record could yet be set in Debswana, with Leduc — who ran the anchor leg for Canada in a competitive opening heat — feeling her team can be even faster than their short-lived world record. “I believe we can do better than that, so let us wait for tomorrow,” she said. “We are great athletes, we are super fast, and we knew that we could expect that.” The U.S. also qualified for the World Championships and Sunday’s final in the men’s 4x100m as Ronnie Baker, Max Thomas, Lance Lang and Pjai Austin won the opening heat with a time of 37.77. Behind them, Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo anchored home nation Botswana to their first-ever World Championship qualification in the event. Canada’s Olympic title-winning team of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney and Andre De Grasse ran their fastest time of the year, 37.56, to also secure their place. Canada also qualified in the women’s 4x100m, while USA placed fourth in their heat. They remain with a chance to qualify for the World Championships in an additional round on Sunday.
