Canada gives tiny sentence to trucker who killed Olympic figure skater mom by speeding into her car during 26 hour shift

By EMMA RICHTER, US SENIOR NEWS REPORTER Published: 22:10, 14 May 2026 | Updated: 22:11, 14 May 2026 A Canadian truck driver has been handed a mere two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for killing a beloved Olympic figure skater.  Sukhwinder Sidhu learned his fate on Wednesday after pleading guilty in February to killing Alexandra Paul, 31, and injuring her 10-month-old son in a horror crash in Melancthon Township, Ontario, on August 22, 2023.  At the time of the deadly crash, Sidhu was working a 26-hour shift and had been behind the wheel for nearly 16 hours straight before colliding into Paul's car on County Road 124, the court heard, according to CTV News.  The trucker, who was also issued a seven-year driving ban, was driving at a high rate of speed when he entered a construction zone and crashed into stopped cars, the court also heard.  The collision involved seven cars, including Paul's, which was thrown into a ditch after the truck slammed into it.  Sidhu was barreling down the road at 107 kilometers, about 65mph, when the posted construction zone speed limit read 60 kilometers, which equates to about 35mph, the outlet reported.  Paul's son, whom she shares with her husband and fellow Olympic figure skater, Mitch Islam, was pulled out of the wreckage by Sidhu and taken to the hospital with a broken leg, the report added.  During Sidhu's sentencing hearing, Paul's family delivered emotional victim impact statements about the Olympian mother who became a lawyer later in life.  Alexandra Paul, 31, died in a horror crash on August 22, 2023, in Melancthon Township, Ontario, after a truck slammed into her car. He will only know from stories about how amazing she was,' he said.  Paul's mother also noted her daughter's outstanding personality, adding that she had her whole world ahead of her.  'What was taken from Alex hurts me more than what was taken from me,' she said. 'The world is not the same to me anymore.'  The skater's father spoke directly to Sidhu, stating: 'What happened that day was absolutely soul crushing for all of us and shouldn't have happened.'  'She was simply amazing and had such a bright future... I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. I couldn't give her another hug. She was just gone.'  Before he was sentenced, Sidhu addressed the court, taking full responsibility for the fatal crash and apologizing to the victims involved.  The convicted criminal touched on him being a father to young children himself, stating he 'cannot imagine the pain' Paul's son will face without her in his life, Sidhu stated.  Paul's family delivered emotional victim impact statements about the Olympian mother who became a lawyer later in life 'I know there is nothing I can say that will fix this or make the grief any better. I know the pain and impact of what happened did not end when the crash ended,' Sidhu continued.  The judge said he came to the decision of how long Sidhu should spend in jail after taking his character into consideration, including his not having a prior criminal record and strong family ties.  However, the judge also recognized the truck driver's driving record, which included speeding in marked construction zones.  Paul started her career on the ice as a young figure skater at the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ontario, according to her obituary.  The rink was a very special place for her, as she met the love of her life, Islam, there.  'They formed a beautiful ice dance team, soon winning the Canadian Junior Ice Dance Championship, and a Silver Medal at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships,' it continued.
