Rabat – The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has responded to threats from Senegal’s government over the chaotic 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, saying he welcomes any investigations into corruption at the continental football organization.

Motsepe made his remarks in Dakar on Wednesday.

The statement came as Senegal launched furious claims following CAF’s appeal board decision to award the AFCON final to Morocco, acknowledging that Senegal had breached the tournament regulations after it abandoned the game against Morocco on January 18.

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw incited his players to leave the pitch after a referee awarded a legitimate penalty to Morocco. The decision marked  Senegal’s withdrawal from the game and caused a lengthy stoppage time before the team returned to the pitch only after Sadio Mane’s interventions.

Despite breaching CAF regulations, Senegal said it will take the case to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), accusing CAF of corruption.

In response, Motsepe said he welcomes any investigations into corruption, “be it by a government or any institution.”

“In fact, I would encourage it. We will give our full cooperation,” he added.

Motsepe emphasized that the best gift he and CAF officials can give to African football is by ensuring that the necessary laws are put in place and properly enforced.

CAF’s president said he received repeated questions about the chaotic AFCON final. For him, he now has an obligation “to respect that the matter is now in front of the highest (sports) court in the world.”

He also rejected critics’ claims, suggesting he treated Morocco favourably in the appeal process.

“Under no circumstances will any single country in Africa be treated more preferentially or more favourably than any other. That will never happen,” he said.

He also called for unity, emphasizing that he is confident the continent will come out of its current challenges.
