Royal observers spotted an unusual mistake in Buckingham Palace's official diary this morning, involving Prince Edward, Duke of Edinburgh, and his teenage son.

The Court Circular, which meticulously documents every engagement undertaken by working members of the Royal Family, incorrectly attributed a military title to James, Earl of Wessex.

The error confused the ceremonial position of Colonel of the Scots Guards, which belongs to Prince Edward rather than his 18-year-old son.

Given the publication's near-perfect reputation for accuracy, the blunder swiftly generated considerable discussion among commentators and royal enthusiasts on social media.

The mistaken entry recorded that "The Earl of Wessex, Colonel, Scots Guards, this morning attended the Regimental Gathering at Somme Barracks, Catterick Garrison."

Royal watchers promptly shared screenshots of the mistake across social media platforms.

Journalist Richard Eden addressed the slip on X, writing: "A rare error in the Court Circular, issued by Buckingham Palace.

"It is the Duke of Edinburgh, not his son, the Earl of Wessex, who is Colonel of the Scots Guards."

Prince Edward, James, Earl of Wessex

James does not hold any military appointments, making the attribution particularly strange to those familiar with royal protocol.

Prince Edward received the prestigious appointment from King Charles in 2024, taking over the ceremonial role from the Duke of Kent.

His uncle had served as Colonel of the Scots Guards for half a century before stepping aside.

The change formed part of broader adjustments to military affiliations that followed the King's accession to the throne.

Though unlikely to cause lasting difficulties within Palace circles, the mistake stands out because such inaccuracies are so uncommon.

Each entry in the Court Circular undergoes careful verification before publication, establishing it as the most official record of royal duties.

James has largely hidden away from the spotlight throughout his youth, although made his Royal Ascot debut last week alongside his mother, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh.

The appearance marked young Earl's first public engagement since attending the royal Easter Sunday service at St George's Chapel.

James did also attend Peter and Harriet's romantic Cotswolds wedding earlier this month, in which he shocked royal fans by towering over his two parents as he swiftly entered All Saints' Church.

Currently completing his A-levels at Radley College, his plans following his studies remain undisclosed.
