'Britain's first halal-only university flats' handed to Muslim students in Scottish city

University students can benefit from "halal halls" thanks to a "faith-led" accommodation firm.

ILM Halal Student Halls provides rooms and communal areas that are "strictly halal-only" for Muslims.

From £165 a week, tenants can benefit from an en-suite room and alcohol-free spaces including a kitchen that is "halal-only".

On its website, ILM says: "We operate three fully-equipped shared student kitchens that are strictly halal-only (pork and alcohol are strictly prohibited).

"This gives Muslim students absolute peace of mind when preparing meals and sharing dining spaces.

"All communal areas in our halls are alcohol-free, maintaining a quiet, clean, and study-friendly atmosphere that ensures a restful night’s sleep."

ILM Halal Student Halls claims to be the UK's first Muslim student accommodation.

Its "halal halls" are based in Dundee, and welcome learners from the University of Dundee, Abertay University and the University of St Andrews.

As well as the halal-only kitchen, emphasising a ban on pork and alcohol, it also provides a cinema room, massage chair, gym and prayer room.

Halal in Arabic means "permissible" and refers to the dietary laws in Islam.

It includes meat that comes from a healthy animal slaughtered by a swift cut to the neck with Allah's name recited during the process.

Pork and alcohol are banned or are "haram", meaning forbidden.

Despite numerous references to Muslims on its website, ILM insists it is open to "students of all backgrounds who respect our halal environment and community values".

It is not clear whether women are allowed to stay there, but in one social media post it asks: "Is your son leaving home for the first time to start life as a uni student?"

And in another, the owner Kashif Rashid, names "brotherhood" as one of the three things that describes ILM.

In its FAQs page, in answer to the questions how is the halal policy enforced, it says: "All communal spaces and kitchens in our halal student accommodation are maintained according to Islamic halal standards.

"All students residing in our student halls are expected to respect these guidelines for the benefit of the community."
