Arsenal moved into the Champions League final with a narrow but controlled win over Atletico Madrid. The Gunners came into the home leg with the scores level following a 1-1 draw in Madrid last week and got the job done in efficient fashion as they extended their unbeaten run in the competition to 14 games this season. After a cagey first half which followed the precedent set in the first leg, Arsenal took the lead. Jan Oblak could only parry Leandro Trossard's shot and Bukayo Saka gobbled up the rebound. Those were to prove to be the home side's only two shots on target all night. Nevertheless, it should have been 2-0 when Piero Hincapie sent in a perfect cross for Viktor Gyokeres, only to see the Arsenal striker side-foot his effort over the bar. In the end, it didn't matter with Atleti lacking firepower - especially after Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann were substituted. Declan Rice had to be alert to slide in and tackle Giuliano Simeone after David Raya pushed a low cross out into the danger zone early on, while Griezmann stung the palms of Raya in the second half. But really Raya's goal was rarely seriously threatened, with substitute Alexander Sorloth fluffing their best opening late on. Here are the talking points as the Premier League leaders go through to face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final on May 30. FOLLOW OUR ARSENAL FB PAGE! Latest Gunners news and more on our dedicated Facebook page Lewis-Skelly was the biggest surprise when Mikel Arteta's team sheet went live. The youngster was rewarded for his performance in central midfield against Fulham on the weekend with another start in place of Martin Zubimendi, in a move that will have pleased Thierry Henry . "Lewis-Skelly showed that that might be a new position for him in terms of next season," Henry purred on Monday and it seems Arteta may agree. His confidence was clear right from the off as he slotted in alongside Rice and moved with freedom in the fluid system, which sees Riccardo Calafiori come inside from left-back. It won't have escaped Lewis-Skelly's notice that England boss Thomas Tuchel was in the house to watch. It had seemed that his chances of making the World Cup had faded, with other in front of him at left-back, but Tuchel's words from November will linger in his mind: "The door is always open for guys who perform on a regular and high level." The ovation he got when leaving the pitch in the second half was enormous. The Gunners knew what they would be facing: an extremely well-organised, dogged and determined Atleti team. They knew they would have to be patient to pick the lock and, after a tight and cagey first 44 minutes, their moment came. Gyokeres ran in behind the defence, coaxed Oblak out of his goal and his deflected cross found its way to Trossard at the back post. The Belgian's shot took a tiny deflection and Oblak could only push it out to Saka, who was alive to the chance of a rebound and showed great poacher instincts to tap in. As ever, there were plenty of decisions for the video assistant referee to check. And, for once, VAR decided not to send the referee to the pitchside monitor. In the first half, Trossard went over under pressure from Griezmann but nothing was doing. In the second half, it was Atleti shouting for penalties, but Gabriel's challenge on Simeone was deemed to be fine because he got the ball, while Calafiori did catch Griezmann in the box and was fortunate that the whistle had already gone for a foul on Gabriel. The debate about whether Gyokeres is good enough to lead the line for Arsenal will continue, but what he is good at was obvious tonight. The Swedish striker missed a brilliant chance to make it 2-0 from Hincapie's pinpoint cross, giving his critics, who say he only scores against weaker opponents, more ammunition. But there is no doubt that Arteta will have been delighted by his centre-forward's all-round contribution. His physicality is exactly what is needed against a physical Atletico side. And it was his running in behind which stretched the defence and led to Saka's goal. The former Sporting Lisbon man is nowhere near the finished article, as he showed by blazing another shot over the bar from the edge of the box, but he does offer his side plenty of useful attributes, especially when Kai Havertz is unavailable (again). This could hardly have been any different from the crazy, wide-open first leg between PSG and Bayern last week. Arsenal and Atleti play a very different brand of football, so it was always going to be a clash of styles in the final. And it will be Arsenal who will try and implement their brand of football on the more free-flowing opponents in Hungary on May 30. Whoever triumphs in Wednesday's second leg, which PSG come into with a 5-4 advantage, will reach the final as favourites. But it would be churlish to rule out Arsenal, who haven't wowed the neutrals but have organisation, grit and sheer willpower in spades.
