Robbie Keane is the only player to score more Premier League goals as a teenager in their debut season than Junior Kroupi and he moved to within one goal of equalling that record with his 11th of the season to put Bournemouth ahead on the hour. Leeds were level eight minutes later, though, when a low, hard cross from Wilfried Gnonto, on as a substitute, went in off James Hill for an own goal. Bournemouth then retook the lead when former Leeds midfielder Tyler Adams crossed for Rayan to finish on 85 minutes. Lukas Nmecha hit the outside of the post for Leeds at the death and that looked to be their last chance before another substitute, Sean Longstaff, fired in the equaliser. Next for Leeds, who are now nine points clear of the relegation zone, is that FA Cup semi-final at Wembley against a Chelsea team no longer coached by Liam Rosenior. The Athletic’s Beren Cross breaks down the game’s key talking points. Daniel Farke resisted any urge to rest his preferred Leeds United legs for the club’s weekend adventure in London. The team is not mathematically safe from relegation, but a 39-point tally and an eight-point gap to 18th saw bookmakers’ odds on their chances significantly lengthen after last weekend. However, the manager did not allow there to be any sign of distraction in his selection. The risk with that focus on the league is the possibility of injury before Wembley. Jayden Bogle was quizzed by a couple of staff members as he came off at half-time and did not reappear for the second half. The wing-back will hope his chance at Sunday has not been snuffed out by injury. The big debate for Farke, even before kick-off, is what he does with Joe Rodon. The Wales international has been a pillar of the team this season and has only started the last two on the bench following injury. This half-time withdrawal for Bogle may open the door for Farke to recall his centre-back and push James Justin into a wing-back role on Sunday in the FA Cup semi-final. Bournemouth were the better side on the night, but Leeds hung in there for long periods and managed to keep the scoreline tight until they stole a point at the death. Pascal Struijk will especially take confidence into Wembley, but for the whole team, this was some adrenaline rush for the big one ahead. Inevitably, Wednesday night’s match was seen as the last chance for United’s players to earn a starting spot in Sunday’s showpiece at Wembley. This starting line-up had won the previous two matches in the Premier League and given Farke little cause to turn to his alternatives on the bench. Lukas Nmecha and Wilfried Gnonto could not have done much more in the opening minutes of their second-half introductions. They were instrumental in the visitors’ equaliser. Ethan Ampadu launched one of his trademark throws into the home area. Each team shared a game of head tennis until Brenden Aaronson ran at the bouncing ball to carry it closer to goal. Nmecha then brought it down, protected it with his back to goal and allowed Gnonto to have a free drive at goal from eight yards out. James Hill could only direct it into his own goal from that range. That goal precipitated United’s best spell of the night, though they could not find a second goal at that point. It seems a stretch for Farke to drop Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Noah Okafor for this pair, but they were crucial in changing the flow of Wednesday’s second half, at least for a 10 to 15-minute period. Sean Longstaff then had a moment of his own from the bench. After so little football over the past few months, he is not about to start in the capital, but for a fringe player like that to have a moment will do wonders for the whole dressing room. Karl Darlow put in an excellent performance for Leeds in Bournemouth. There was no clean sheet to take home, but the goalkeeper was crucial in keeping the hosts out for long spells. The Wales international has long been established as the club’s No 1 this season, but Lucas Perri has cemented himself as Farke’s chosen stopper in the FA Cup. The Brazilian’s exploits, including in two penalty shootout wins, in the cup have firmly warranted the gloves in that competition. It would be very bold of Farke to now pivot away from Perri as the team goes to Wembley, but Darlow could not have done a lot more to push his case forward for inclusion. This is the eternal dilemma for managers who knowingly choose to use their back-up keepers in the cup. As the rounds progress and the chance of a trophy starts to become a reality, there is the temptation to revert to the man you know is, overall, better between the sticks. Darlow’s done his part. We will bring you this after he has spoken at the post-match press conference. Sunday, April 26: Chelsea, FA Cup semi-final (Wembley), 3pm UK, 10am ET Spot the pattern.
