Booming thunder heard during intense storm in Wales that left people without power

Intense thunder and lightning struck across Wales after days of a scorching heatwave. People have been flocking to parks and beaches in recent days to make the most of the sunshine and "exceptional" heat which has been breaking records across the UK. But on Wednesday evening very different pictures were seen as the intense heat brought thunder and lightning to parts of the country. The Met Office issued a yellow warning for all counties except Flintshire and said areas could be hit with "torrential downpours of rain, frequent lightning, large hail and strong, gusty winds". The storms caused some disruption, with a number of homes experiencing power cuts. Transport for Wales said it had experienced damage to the signalling system by lightning strikes in Pembrokeshire, adding that services may be delayed and work was ongoing to fix the problem. While the worst of the storms were seen in the west of the country, isolated flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder were seen elsewhere, including in parts of south Wales. People reported the storms in Aberdare , Rhondda Cynon Taf and Swansea . The storms come after Wales experienced its hottest May day ever on Tuesday as temperatures climbed to a scorching 32.9C in Cardiff . While the storms have brought no immediate ease in temperatures and the heatwave is continuing, it does look set to end on Friday, according to the Met Office.
