Jerome Miron / Imagn Images Share articleThe Blue Jackets achieved one of their major offseason objectives Tuesday, signing veteran center Charlie Coyle to a six-year, $36 million contract. The deal carries a salary cap hit of $6 million per season. Coyle, 34, was a pending unrestricted free agent with a big market awaiting him on July 1 if the Blue Jackets couldn’t keep him in the fold. While Coyle will be 40 years old when the contract expires, he has proven to be remarkably durable, having not missed a game in five-plus seasons. The deal carries a full no-move clause for the first four seasons. In 82 games with the Blue Jackets this past season, he had 20 goals and 38 assists for 58 points, with only 14 penalty minutes and a plus-3 rating despite drawing top opponents each night. “Charlie made a tremendous impact on and off the ice for us last season and keeping him in Columbus was a priority,” Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “He is the definition of a true pro, and a durable, reliable, productive right-shot center whose leadership, character and consistency are extremely valuable in this league.” Coyle was acquired by the Blue Jackets last summer in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche. Along with Adam Fantilli, Sean Monahan and Cole Sillinger, among others, Coyle gives the Blue Jackets a foundation at center ice the organization has never before enjoyed. Spot the pattern.
