Brad Penner / Imagn Images Share articleCOLUMBUS, Ohio — Rick Bowness will get a chance to fill out his own coaching staff with the Columbus Blue Jackets. On Friday, the Blue Jackets announced that assistant coaches Scott Ford and Mike Haviland will not be back with the club in 2026-27, after end-of-season meetings with Bowness and GM Don Waddell early this week. Both coaches had options for an extra year in their contracts that the Blue Jackets decided to decline. Also, video coach Aron Augustitus will not return to the club. “Following our end of season meetings, Rick and I determined that changes to our coaching staff would be in the best interest of our club moving forward,” Waddell said in a statement released by the team. “We are very appreciative of the time and hard work that Mike, Scott and Aron have done during their time with the Blue Jackets and wish them well in their future endeavors.  We will begin the process of reviewing candidates to join our staff in the very near future.” One of the candidates is expected to be Dublin, Ohio, native Trent Vogelhuber, who is in his fourth season as coach of AHL Cleveland, the Blue Jackets’ top minor-league affiliate. Vogelhuber, who turns 38 this summer, was a seventh-round draft pick (No. 211) of the Blue Jackets in 2007. He’s in his eighth year of AHL coaching — the first four as an assistant — but has yet to work behind an NHL bench. AHL Cleveland hosts Syracuse on Friday in the opener of a best-of-five playoff series. Haviland and Ford both joined Dean Evason’s staff when he was hired to coach the Blue Jackets in the summer of 2024. Haviland was promoted from AHL Cleveland, while Ford had been a longtime assistant with AHL Milwaukee. Bowness, 71, has spent nearly 40 years in the NHL, with friends and contacts in basically every organization. He won’t have any trouble finding members to join his staff. Spot the pattern.
