Families could pocket more than £1,500 in savings with straightforward changes, a BBC expert explained. This assertion comes from consumer specialist Harry Kind, who informed BBC Morning Live that opting for more energy and water-efficient appliances can dramatically reduce bills. He maintained that recent claims of a "ban" on conventional tumble dryers have been exaggerated, while a new wave of appliances, such as heat pump dryers, can deliver genuine savings on energy and costs. During his appearance on the show, he explained that new minimum energy performance standards for tumble dryers anticipated from 2027 will essentially eliminate inefficient models by compelling manufacturers to enhance efficiency, labelling and repairability. The most substantial savings don't come from eco settings, but rather from selecting the appropriate appliance from the outset. For instance, Mr Kind highlighted that switching to a heat pump tumble dryer could revolutionise household expenses. Heat pump dryer: approximately 33p per cycle Condenser dryer: approximately 83p per cycle That represents a saving of 50p each time you dry your laundry. When used three times weekly, this accumulates to: £78 saved annually £1,560 saved over a typical 20-year lifespan He said: "If you buy the right tumble dryer, you can save a fortune." Despite higher initial costs for heat pump dryers, prices have dropped significantly - with certain models now available for under £250 - making them considerably more affordable during the cost of living squeeze. The consumer expert also addressed a widespread misconception: that eco modes consume more energy due to their extended running times. In fact, quite the reverse is true. He clarified that eco settings operate on a "lower and slower" principle: Lower temperatures Reduced water consumption Extended cycle durations He drew a comparison to fuel-efficient driving, explaining: "If you drive at 50mph instead of 70mph, it takes longer, but it's cheaper because you use less fuel." Eco settings on washing machines can dramatically slash energy consumption. He noted they typically reduce energy usage by 30-40%, translating to annual savings of between £18 and £48. This is because approximately 90% of a washing machine's energy consumption stems from heating water, which eco cycles significantly minimise. The savings are equally impressive in the kitchen. He referenced research conducted by consumer group Which?, which revealed that operating a dishwasher on standard cycles costs roughly £71 annually, compared to £52.13 when using the eco setting - delivering nearly £20 in yearly savings. Mr Kind also offered practical strategies to further trim household bills: Dry garments outside whenever feasible - it costs nothing Don't overload machines (target 80% capacity) Regularly clean lint filters for optimal performance and safety Take advantage of lower off-peak electricity rates where available Cut down on unnecessary washing to prolong your clothes' lifespan He also cautioned that drying clothing indoors without proper ventilation can release 1–3 litres of moisture into the air, which may lead to dampness and push up heating bills.
