As is customary when the team wins trophies, the players and fans gathered at Marienplatz, the city’s main square. There, from the balcony of the town hall, Vincent Kompany and his team lifted the Meisterschale — awarded to the Bundesliga winners each season — above thousands of Bayern supporters below. The event was being broadcast live on Bayern’s YouTube channel, which inadvertently revealed an end-of-season prank seemingly conducted by fans of the club’s city neighbours, 1860 Munich. As the celebrations developed, a vast flag bearing Bayern’s crest was unfurled, and began to surf the crowd. But, rather than “FC Bayern München”, the outside band of the crest read “FC Bauern Hurensöhne”, the PG version of which translates to something equivalent to “FC Farmers, sons of w—-s”. And that was the message displayed around the world, as aerial footage was shown live on YouTube. How the flag got into Marienplatz remains a mystery. To those responsible, it is not: the numbers “1860” were visible in one of the quadrants. The prank was spotted by some of the Bayern players, who alerted Stephan Lehmann, the event’s MC and the long term stadium announcer at Allianz Arena, who then instructed the fans below to “catch up with the tarpaulin”. It was then captured and folded up, but not before it has been seen around the world. It was a rare win for 1860. The club have not won a German championship since 1966 and have spent the modern era in frequent turmoil. They were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2004 and, afflicted by financial dysfunction and poor results, sank as low as the fourth tier of German football before resettling in the 3.Liga, where they have been competing since 2018, most recently finishing 8th.
