A rare Union Jack flag from the Battle of Trafalgar has been secured for the nation after North East Museums paid around £450,000 to acquire the artefact.
The flag had faced the prospect of leaving Britain before Labour stepped in and imposed an export ban, recognising its outstanding national importance.
This restriction provided UK institutions with a window to raise the necessary funds and keep the item on home soil.
The bulk of the purchase price, £400,000, came from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, with additional contributions from various organisations and the Collingwood family.
The flag will go on permanent display at Newcastle's Discovery Museum, where North East Museums plan to create a dedicated exhibition space.
It was flown aboard HMS Royal Sovereign during the famous 1805 naval engagement, which crushed Napoleon Bonaparte's ambitions to invade Britain.
The vessel served as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, a Newcastle native who held the role of second-in-command to Lord Nelson.
Baron Collingwood led his column of ships into the fight, with more than 500 sailors from the Tyne and Wear region serving across Nelson's fleet, many of them aboard the Royal Sovereign itself.
Only three flags from the battle are known to have survived, making this hand-stitched wool bunting artefact exceptionally rare.
The conflict proved a pivotal moment in the Napoleonic Wars, though it came at a heavy cost, thousands of men perished, including Nelson himself.
Susan Collingwood-Cameron, the vice-admiral's great-great-great niece, spoke of the flag's deep personal and regional significance.
She said: "This flag is said to have been made by sailors on board the ship, many of whom came from Tyneside and were affectionately referred to by him as his 'Tars of the Tyne'."

She continued: "It will be a tribute to them, and the important role they played, in one of our greatest moments in history. There may well be descendants of their families still living in the area."
The flag's journey home to Newcastle carries particular resonance given Collingwood's roots in the city and the substantial contribution of North East seafarers to the battle.
Liberal Democrat Newcastle councillor Rob Austin described the acquisition as a "fantastic achievement" that would help residents and visitors understand how the city shaped the nation's history.
Measuring 1.53m by 2.75m, the flag still bears visible marks of combat, including gunpowder staining and tears caused by splinters during the engagement.
After the battle, the flag was retained as a keepsake by Charles Aubrey Antram, a 17-year-old master's mate serving on the Royal Sovereign.
It subsequently passed through generations of his family before eventually entering a private collection.
While the £450,000 purchase has been completed, North East Museums still requires approximately £250,000 to cover the costs of transporting, conserving and housing the flag in a permanent exhibition.
The organisation has so far raised more than two-thirds of its overall £700,000 target and is running a crowdfunding campaign to bridge the remaining gap.
Keith Merrin, Director of North East Museums, said: "It is wonderful to have acquired this rare and historically significant flag to ensure it remains in the UK and specifically in North East England, which was home to Vice-Admiral Collingwood and many of his crew."
He added: "Collingwood is a popular figure in the North East but perhaps isn't given the national hero status that he and his crew deserve."
Mr Merrin confirmed that fundraising efforts would continue so the museum could build a permanent display centred on the flag at the Discovery Museum, where it could be appreciated by hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
Chairman of the National Heritage Memorial Fund Simon Thurley called the flag "an extraordinary survivor of one of the most significant moments in UK naval history, with a powerful connection to the people and heritage of the North East."
