Walker left the field under his own power, but with a towel covering his face and being escorted by manager Joe Espada and assistant athletic trainer Rafael Freitas. Walker remained on his feet throughout the ordeal. The pitch, thrown by Red Sox southpaw Tyler Samaniego, appeared to break Walker’s helmet upon impact. A piece of the helmet flew off and landed behind the batter’s box. Walker had three hits in his previous four plate appearances, prolonging a resurgent start to his second season as an Astro.
