Following a late arrival to preseason testing in Barcelona, Aston has struggled for reliability throughout the early stages of this year due to a vibration issue that caused damage to the battery on the engine, as well as leaving the drivers fearing permanent nerve damage at one stage. Aston and its engine partner, Honda, have reported regular “countermeasures” being introduced at the first three races of the year in a bid to resolve the problems. At the last race in Japan, it recorded its first finish of the season courtesy of Fernando Alonso in 18th place, but the team remains rooted to the foot of F1 constructors’ table despite significant investment in recent years with the aim of fighting for championships. Following that result, Aston made use of the five-week break after the cancellation of the races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia by taking one of its cars to Honda’s engine facility in Sakura. At the factory, the engine could be properly evaluated while attached to the chassis on a dyno-testing device, using more sensors that offered Honda’s engineers a better understanding of the vibration problem than testing the engine alone. “We found some good progress on vibrations,” Honda’s F1 trackside chief, Shintaro Orihara, told reporters in Miami on Thursday. “Then we introduced some countermeasures for this event.” Orihara said that Honda had introduced some hardware changes to help resolve the issue, but declined to go into detail on what they or the wider countermeasures entailed. He also would not comment on whether the battery was capable of recharging at the maximum level. Mike Krack, Aston’s chief trackside officer, was confident the team would be in better shape for the upcoming Miami weekend, believing it would “have less and less restrictions going forward”. Asked if the drivers would be limited for maximum revs again in Miami, Krack said: “We will not speak about operation of the (engine).” Even as the team improves the reliability of its car, it is still behind for overall performance. Neither Alonso or teammate Lance Stroll have qualified within three seconds of the pole position time so far this season, and filled out the last row of the grid in Japan. “We have to acknowledge that we have to do some steps (on performance) too,” said Krack. “I also said we cannot expect miracles going to Miami, and this is the case. “We are improving step by step, both for reliability and performance, but we must not forget the same applies to our competitors. It’s a development race. As soon as the season is on, it’s very tough to catch up.” Alonso, 44, acknowledged it was a “tough moment” for Aston, but the two-time world champion expressed confidence it could make improvements. “The more time we have, and the more experiments we do, I think it will help the team,” said Alonso. “We have some fixes here on the reliability and on the vibrations. Hopefully we can feel less vibrations on the steering wheel in the cockpit and have a better race.” One scenario that could give Aston more of a chance to snatch a good result comes via the forecast rain and thunderstorms that could impact Sunday’s race in Miami, which could shake up the order and lead to more variables through the race.
