A UK value supermarket chain is considering exploring vending machines to secure high-theft items in stores. Asda could introduce vending machines for products such as razor blades in an effort to curb rising shoplifting incidents . It is understood that the idea would build on a trial concept at the company's Ashton-under-Lyne store in Greater Manchester , where similar machines are already used for products like vapes and cigarettes. The system would see customers select an item on a screen and receive a ticket to take to a checkout for payment . Once payment has been made, the customer would be issued a second ticket that activates the vending machine to dispense the product. While company officials have discussed expanding the approach to other high-risk goods, no final decisions have been made, Retail Customer Experience reported. It is understood that a broader rollout is not expected in the near term as the trial continues. Retailers have been invest heavily in loss-prevention strategies. According to data from the British Retail Consortium, 5.5 million shoplifting incidents were recorded in the country last year. This cost about $542 million, but the actual number is likely higher due to under reporting. Supermarkets have spent more than $6.77 billion on security upgrades over the past five years. These security upgrades include expanded CCTV coverage and additional in-store personnel. Bakery chain Greggs has made a huge change to some of its shops as it dramatically attempts to beat shoplifters. The company has moved self-service fridges and shelves behind the counter in a drastic change to some locations to fend off looters. This means customers in high risk areas will not be able to pick up a sandwich or a drink before going to pay, instead workers will pull out items from behind the till that will only be accessible by staff.المصدر: Mirror | Source: Mirror
