Apple sparks outrage for removing village names in south Lebanon

ALBAWABA - American tech giant Apple is under fire after several users noticed that village and town names in southern Lebanon were reportedly removed from Apple Maps, as tensions between the country and Israel escalate. 

Many users flooded social media with screenshots of Apple Maps, showcasing blank areas that would normally be labelled with town and village names. This sparked concerns among Lebanese locals who accused the tech giant of "supporting Israel's colonisation of southern Lebanon."

A social media user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "The goal has alwayes been "greater" Israhell. Hostages, Hamas, Hezbollah, nuclear weapons, what else, is just bs gaslighting."

Apple is no longer showing names of villages and towns in Southern Lebanon, it’s removed.

Another added while sharing a screenshot of the village names in southern Lebanon, "Please save this. They are erasing Lebanon from the map and pretend it never existed like Palestine." 

On the contrary, others stated that the navigation software has never displayed the names of villages and towns, accusing internet users who share the report of "spreading fake news." 

An X user wrote, "They were never there to begin with. That's why no one uses Apple Maps in Lebanon. Can't even get any directions from anywhere to anywhere."

According to Roya, Apple has not released an official statement regarding the issue at hand as boycott calls erupt on social media.
