American school 'ignored complaints about trans student leering at girls in female changing rooms'

A North Carolina secondary school has been accused of ignoring complaints about a transgender pupil who allegedly watched female students getting undressed in the girls' changing rooms.

Cox Mill High School in Concord is at the centre of a formal complaint from America First Legal (AFL), a conservative advocacy organisation.

The group claims the former head teacher told pupils that the matter was "too political to address".

AFL's complaint references grievances submitted by both students and parents to the local education authority.

Among those cited is student Trista Ruck, who addressed the Cabarrus County School Board at a public session in December.

She told education officials: "There is a biological male who dresses and acts like a female who is on the football and basketball cheer team. That is not the issue.

"The issue is whenever he dresses and undresses in the women's locker room and uses the women's restroom."

She also described an account from a fellow pupil on one of the school's sports teams.

Ms Ruck said: "[A] peer of mine said that during scheduled spring workouts for her sport, she was in the locker room changing when she noticed him watching her and the other girls dress and undress.

"She stated that this made her feel extremely uncomfortable."

The student then presented a response from then-principal Chris Myers, who told that teenager that administrators had "decided that there isn't anything we can do" and that female pupils "can go somewhere else" if they felt uneasy.

The student said she had "tried to avoid the restrooms at all costs" and accused school leadership and the athletics director of having "blatantly ignored our concerns."

Mr Myers resigned as Cox Mill principal just 10 days after the explosive school board meeting.

AFL has submitted its complaint to both the Department of Education and the Department of Justice, seeking an investigation into the school district.

The organisation - established by White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller - contends the school may have breached Title IX provisions prohibiting sex-based discrimination at federally funded institutions.

"Girls should never be forced to sacrifice their privacy, safety, or dignity because school officials are afraid to tell the truth about biological sex," AFL senior counsel Ian Prior declared.

Parental concerns about transgender student access to girls' facilities at Cox Mill emerged as early as 2024.

School officials at that time reportedly said they lacked a specific policy and followed the Biden administration's Title IX interpretation as outlawing discrimination on the basis of “gender identity".

Upon taking office in January 2025, Donald Trump unveiled sweeping changes to US policy on gender ideology.

The US President declared that his administration would only recognise the two biological sexes, male and female.

The executive order reads: "Efforts to eradicate the biological reality of sex fundamentally attack women by depriving them of their dignity, safety, and well-being."
