Rabat – Morocco is on track to create more than one million jobs by the end of 2026, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said on Friday as he chaired a meeting to review progress in the country’s employment strategy.

The announcement comes as part of a broader assessment of the government’s employment roadmap, which officials said has already delivered positive indicators in the labor market.

According to data presented during the meeting, Morocco’s economy created 850,000 jobs in non-agricultural sectors between 2021 and 2025, with an annual average of 170,000 jobs. It created 233,000 jobs in 2025 alone.

The number of jobs created could exceed one million by the end of 2026 if this momentum continues, the government said, though it conceded that this estimate does not include losses in the agricultural sector due to ongoing drought conditions.

Strong performance in key sectors

Several sectors showed notable progress, particularly agriculture and tourism. Agricultural activities generated 365 million working days during the current season, representing a 7% increase compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, the tourism sector exceeded expectations, creating 92,000 jobs in 2026, well above the initial target of 80,000.

The government also discussed efforts to support small and medium-sized enterprises.

Entrepreneurs submitted 170 project applications under a dedicated support scheme, mainly in industry, hospitality, and food services. Of these, 21 projects were approved, representing investments of MAD 312 million, with MAD 49 million in government support.

Officials discussed additional measures to improve access to public contracts for these businesses and strengthen their role in boosting employment at the local level.

The meeting also focused on expanding employment programs for young people, including those without diplomas.

Existing initiatives such as “Idmaj” and “Tahfiz” will extend to new sectors, while a new program, “Tadarouj,” aims to scale up apprenticeship training across industries. The goal is to integrate 100,000 trainees each year into the workforce, supporting Morocco’s ongoing economic transformation.
