A wine tasting evening with her new lover, dancing... then stabbed eight times in cold blood on the doorstep of her French holiday home: Minute-by-minute, murdered retiree Karen Carter's final moments revealed

Perched above a spectacularly scenic bend in the River Dordogne, the sleepy stone-built village of fewer than 700 people is the kind of spot far more likely to appear on postcards rather than in crime reports. Honey-coloured cottages surround a Romanesque church, walnut groves stretch across the rolling countryside and life proceeds at an unhurried pace in this corner of the 'Black Perigord', so named for the dark rich loamy soil here. Glamourous Karen, 65, who had lived most of her years with her husband Alan in east London and South Africa, firmly believed that in France she had found the life of which she had always dreamed. For more than 15 years, the mother-of-four devoted herself to restoring an old farmhouse with its outbuildings called Les Chouettes (The Owls), converting them into gites to welcome holidaymakers and immerse herself in village life. Friends recalled a sociable woman of boundless enthusiasm, who adjusted to French culture, learning its language with ease. Although the Carters remained married, their lives increasingly diverged. Mr Carter spent most of his time in South Africa while his wife devoted herself to managing the French properties, spending progressively longer periods in Tremolat. At the same time Karen began to form an attachment to local retired French business executive, Jean-Francois Guerrier, 75, which detectives now believe was a key factor in sowing the seeds of her brutal demise. As well as both being close to Mr Guerrier, the two women were close to each other, literally. Ms Autefort's house is just half a mile from the Carter home. Last week, more than a year after the killing which stunned the region and baffled French police, investigators formally charged Ms Autefort with premeditated murder, alleging a motive rooted in personal jealousy. Karen's idyllic life came to a violent end on the evening of April 29, 2025, when she was mercilessly stabbed to death outside her home on the outskirts of Tremolat. According to friends, at the time of her death, she was on the point of telling her husband that she wanted a divorce. But many locals were not only aghast at the news that Ms Autefort had been charged, but also sceptical: Could a woman aged 69 (now 70) really have carried out such an appalling attack on another person, stabbing her eight times in a frenzy of violence? Ms Autefort was arrested only a few days after the murder but released when she supplied what was described at the time as a 'watertight' alibi. However, according to reports this week, that alibi had sprung not only a leak, but was described by police as peppered with 'significant holes'. Quite how it took the authorities more than a year to unpick her story is another puzzling aspect of this most perplexing of cases. Here, we trace the significant events of the night of the murder, examining not only what we know did take place, but also what the police now believe happened. Over the 16 years or so she spent in Tremolat, Karen threw herself headlong into village life. She was a regular volunteer at a community-run bar called Cafe Village in the centre of the hamlet. That was where she first met Mr Guerrier, and the pair can be seen dancing together with others to the Gloria Gaynor hit I Will Survive in footage shot one blissful evening. Karen was also a leading light in Les Reines du Foot (The Queens of Football) a team comprising women aged over 50, for whom she even managed to organise a short tour of South Africa to participate in the Grannies International Football Tournament. On the night of her death, Karen had attended a wine-tasting event hosted by Mr Guerrier at his imposing farmhouse in the hills above the village. Witnesses told investigators that Karen appeared relaxed and in good spirits throughout the evening and she left shortly before 10pm.  All 15 or so people present have been interviewed by police and given DNA samples. Driving her Dacia Duster car, with her beloved crossbred puppy Haku beside her, Karen made the ten-minute journey back to her own house on the other side of Tremolat, along the narrow, partly wooded Route de Soulalève. She promised to call Mr Guerrier to let him know that she had arrived safely, but that call would never come. Instead, after parking her car outside her property, close to the entrance gate, someone attacked her with a large knife before she could enter the house. The assault was unusually violent. According to the post-mortem examination, Karen suffered numerous stab wounds inflicted with exceptional force.  Prosecutors said she received multiple knife injuries to the chest, abdomen and groin, while defensive wounds on her hands and forearms indicated she had desperately tried to fend off her attacker. The ferocity of the attack led investigators almost immediately to conclude that this was no burglary interrupted by chance. Instead, detectives believed the victim herself had been deliberately targeted. Perigueux prosecutor Sylvie Martins-Guedes later described the crime as one displaying 'a determination to kill', language betraying the severity and repeated nature of the wounds. The first to discover the crime was Mr Guerrier, who was worried after not receiving a call from Karen. With his calls unanswered, he turned up after making the short drive to her house and found her in a pool of blood. Paramedics and firefighters arrived quickly, followed by gendarmes (police officers) and forensic investigators. Despite their efforts, Karen had suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Could Ms Autefort have followed Karen in her own silver Seat Leon car, or alternatively parked somewhere en route, waiting for her to overtake? The road is full of secluded spots which would have served that purpose, especially in darkness. If she did commit the murder, it wasn't far to Ms Autefort's own detached house on the Chemin des Champs, a track just over half a mile further down the Route de Soulaleve where it turns into Route du Castelot. It would only be a two-minute drive away, or 12 minutes if one chose to walk. Yet no murder weapon has ever been found, despite rigorous searches of the roadside and undergrowth, and there have been no public reports of forensic evidence backing up the charge against Ms Autefort. Mrs Carter and her husband ran the property where she died as a holiday let in the village of Tremolat, which is located east of Bordeaux Mrs Carter divided her time between the Dordogne and the home she shared with her husband, Alan (pictured) in KuGompo City, South Africa Given the severity of Karen's injuries, the killer would almost certainly have had traces of their victim's blood on their clothing. In the days and weeks after the murder, wild theories soon made their way into the media, including that Mr Carter had somehow organised the 'hit' on his wife from some 7,000 miles away. He acknowledged the fact this week as he welcomed the news that the police had finally charged someone. 'It's been extremely upsetting to hear what's being said, though more for our children and the rest of the family than me,' he said. Mr Guerrier was the first to be questioned and was released without charge, as was, at least initially, Ms Autefort, who admitted her infatuation with Mr Guerrier. They remain the only two people to have been arrested in the case so far. Mr Guerrier is said to have told police that he 'had come to spend the night at Karen's,' leaked interview notes revealed. He first pointed the finger of suspicion at Ms Autefort, suggesting detectives should investigate her. The record stated: 'During his brief custody period, Jean-Francois Guerrier directed them to Marie-Laure Autefort, a resident of Trémolat who lives only about a ten-minute walk from the victim's home, cutting across the fields. 'He described her as a woman who had fallen madly in love with him the previous year, to the point of divorcing the father of her children after several decades of marriage. 'She was then terribly frustrated when she realised that this budding passion was not reciprocated.' Neighbours struggled to come to terms with what had occurred in their midst. 'Nothing like this has ever happened here,' one told French media. Others spoke of locking their doors for the first time in years after learning a killer had struck. For expatriates living across the Dordogne, the murder shattered the image of rural France as an idyllic refuge from the urban crime that they had come to associate with the UK. An early question facing the gendarmerie was motive, but theft was rapidly discounted as the explanation. Karen's handbag was found at the scene, and her jewellery had not been removed, nor was there any indication that the attacker searched for valuables or tried to enter the house. So the only conclusion was that she was the intended target of the murder. Forensic specialists spent much of the night examining the area around Karen's vehicle. Photographs published later showed the entrance to the property was sealed behind blue-and-white police tape while white-suited scenes-of-crime officers searched the ground. Investigators collected blood samples, footprints, fibres and DNA evidence. The investigation immediately expanded beyond Tremolat as officers attempted to reconstruct every movement Karen had made during her final day. Investigators sought CCTV footage from neighbouring villages, although surveillance cameras are relatively uncommon in rural Dordogne. This week, so many months after the killing, the police tape was still visible sealing off Les Chouettes, though an area of gravel which was once heavily bloodstained was now overgrown with weeds, and wisteria had almost hidden the crime scene tape. Last year, the Carters' daughter Lizzy, 30, told The Times that the place where her mother was killed had become 'sacred ground'. Seeing photographs of it dishevelled and cordoned off by police was painful, she said, unrecognisable from the property her parents bought in 2009 and spent years renovating between family holidays. 'At this time of year it would be full of flowers, our parents working in the garden together,' she said. Meanwhile, at Ms Autefort's large and well-kempt house, a large padlock was visible on the gate and no car was in the drive. Although she was released on the equivalent of bail while the judge-led criminal investigation continues, it is believed Ms Autefort had agreed with the authorities that she can stay with friends away from the village. Jacques-Edouard Andrault, the investigating judge in the case, said in a statement on Wednesday that 'the investigations conducted as part of the judicial inquiry opened on May 7, 2025, have led the investigating judge to formally charge her'. Investigators have disclosed only limited details about the evidence gathered abiding by the usual level of secrecy which surrounds judicial investigations in France. However, prosecutors have said detectives gradually developed evidence indicating that the motive lay within a complicated web of personal relationships. According to the Perigueux prosecutors, investigators concluded that Karen's relationship with Mr Guerrier had generated intense resentment on the part of another local resident, though they did not name Ms Autefort. French media reported that investigators concluded jealousy to be the principal motive. Although at one time in French history, a 'crime of passion' (crime passionnel) could famously be put forward as a partial mitigation, that defence was officially abolished in 1975. Ms Autefort was placed under formal investigation, known as mise en examen for premeditated murder. Unlike a conviction, a mise en examen means the investigating judge considers there to be serious or consistent evidence justifying a full judicial investigation. It is not a finding of guilt, and the accused is still considered innocent while the investigation continues. Among the material reportedly relied upon are witness testimony, forensic findings and investigative work conducted over more than a year. Philippe Monribot, Ms Autefort's brother, has confirmed she was in love with Mr Guerrier and deeply upset by his affair with Karen – but said the thought of her murdering someone was preposterous. 'It's a catastrophe,' he said. 'The police messed up at the start of the investigation and when you get it wrong at the beginning, it's difficult to get it right afterwards.' The charging of a local woman while being a potential step on the road to closure for the villagers of Tremolat, was also a shocking development. Ms Autefort too, is well-known and liked within the community. Her photograph as a schoolchild is on the website of the French equivalent of Friends Reunited, and the Mayor, Eric Chassange, is in the same class. She was a key member of a local genealogy group and co-authored a history of the village a few years ago, entitled Tremolat d'Antan (Tremolat from yesteryear). So for many residents, this week's development raised as many questions as it answered. How had such intense personal hostility remained hidden in such a tight community? What exactly occurred in the minutes before Karen arrived home? Did the attacker wait outside the property, or follow her from the wine tasting? Those questions may ultimately be answered only if the case proceeds to trial. The judicial process now underway is intended to determine whether the prosecution can prove beyond reasonable doubt that Karen's life was deliberately taken by a woman she knew. Whatever the eventual outcome of that process, Karen's death will forever leave its mark on one of France's most tranquil villages, where her search for peace ended in an act of extraordinary violence.
