In the non-televised portion of the ceremony, Schmigadoon! won Tonys for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, while Death of a Salesman won Tonys for Best Scenic Design of a Play, Best Lighting Design of a Play and Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Play for Laurie Metcalf. Veteran performer John Lithgow won the first big acting award of the night by taking the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play Tony for Giant. The musicals The Lost Boys and Schmigadoon! led the nominations going into the ceremony with 12 nods each.
